My Favorite Hip Hop has a new home Sugar Free Music
Since my tastes in music have become even more eclectic over the past few months, I feel the blog should reflect this. This is not a farewell to My Favorite Hip Hop. I will still post here but I will only put up Hip Hop music. Everything else including Hip Hop will be at Sugar Free Music

"Seven piece NYC hip hop collective Dujeous (pronounced doo-gee-us) have just dropped their first album, City Limits, after numerous singles and over 10 years of ripping up live venues across the globe. The band, featuring 3 MCs, a bassist, guitar player, trumpeter and drummer, have honed their multi-genre fusion of reggae, rock and jazz all through the common language of hip hop. Already well known in hip hop circles backing artists such as the X-ecutioner's Rob Swift, Dujeous have successfully crafted an album that puts their "get live" energy in your face with genuine old school flair. The name Dujeous is a self-imposed synonym for "dope, good indescribable stuff" and within their City Limits you couldn't really ask for a more simple yet apt description."
Criminally underrated hip hop band from new york city. I can only dream of seeing them play live.

Throwing together a guest list with the likes of Mista Sinista, Mr. Eon, DJ JS1, Insight, and Akrobatik doesn't hurt either." ...

"While most kids wrote a mediocre college essay with the hopes of getting into a good college after high school, Maspyke recorded a 3 song demo with the hopes of getting signed by a good label. And while other kids signed up for classes at so-and-so state, the boys of Maspyke signed with Elektra Records/Head Up Entertainment just one year after leaving high school. Almost three years later, after recording with gold and platinum artists and rejecting any and all of the industry’s attempts to mold them into whatever was hot at the moment, group members Roddy Rod, Hanif Jamiyl, and Tableek departed the security of a major label to pursue their own vision. With little idea what lay ahead, the Springfield, MA natives set out to carve their own niche in the ever-growing world of hip-hop. Their goal? The creation of Static." ..

If you know Class B you might know he's one fifth of Forgotten Lores, one half of The BeatMachine Bandits and one of the three founders of CoxButter. If you don't know him, well now you know.
And it's propably best if we tell you about our third releas in his own words: "Few years ago I had the idea of making an album where I'd get one beat from every producer I'm friends with and wanted to work with. This was around 2003 when we in FL were finishing our debut, Týndi Hlekkurinn. A few beats here, a song there, and I kept writing and trying to get better ideas for songs in between dealing with the every day shit. Since the start of this process I've been drifting from country to country, jobplace to jobplace and in and out of school. The songs on Upset EP are the offspring of these travels, written and recorded in Helsinki, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and at home in good'ole Reykjavik (and maybe some other places, I can't remember). But somehow the idea of getting one beat from each producer didn't work out and I ended up in Intro's home studio in Copenhagen where I asked him to finish the EP with me. Which he did, fortunately, otherwise I'd propably still be sitting on these tracks..."

A pulsating aura emanates from cavernous bars, who's dim atmosphere provides a solace from the harsh reality of daytime life. The drizzle doesn't impede large crowds from lining the sidewalks, and if anything, adds to the overall brilliance by covering everything in a glistening mist. Almost everyone is in costume - bright clothing, futuristic hairstyles, metal chains, spikes, necklaces, ear-nose-lip-brow ring-studs, over-sized fake-diamond-encrusted glasses. Maybe this is the future we read about in sci-fi novels (minus all the post-apocalyptic drama). [...]" ...

"While not exactly sounding just like the old school, Time Machine (emcees Comel and Jaysonic and DJ Mekalek) do function on an old school principle: find the right sample and the right drum break and make something dope by looping the sublime. The reviewer's left a bit adrift in an attempt to explain the quality of the music because the goodness doesn't rest in originality or compositional genius. This is music that's good for its warmth, its reverie, its proud flaws and rough edges, its intangibles. One thing's certain: Mekalek's got a Midas touch on his vinyl, and Comel and Jaysonic know how to rhyme over his bullion." ..

"Los Angeles via Washington D.C. trio Time Machine's debut album opens with "Time's Fly," a dreamy bit of down-tempo hip-hop based on clavinet and vibraphone samples that recall the acid jazz moment and a goofy but positive lyrical message that smacks hard of De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising. Elsewhere, bits of A Tribe Called Quest ("Reststop Sweetheart"), Arrested Development ("A Cold Day in Hell"), Digital Underground ("Let's Not Be Real," which also starts and ends with a great West Coast piano jazz sample that sounds like Vince Guaraldi's work on the Peanuts specials), and the rest of the pre-gangsta golden age get their due. Even commercial happy-rap folks like DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince or Kid 'N Play come to mind on overtly silly tracks like "Spelling Bee." Slow Your Roll adds little that's new to the hip-hop lexicon, but its evocation of the past is done with such obvious affection and knowledge of the style that it's close to impossible not to find it endearing. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide" ..

"After Midnight. Concept is fairly simple. Laidback vibes. Nighttime music. “play dis only at night”. Something about the nighttime induces different feelings and emotions than the daytime. Jazzy. Soulful. Didnt want to get too left field with it. Want yall to listen to it before sleepytime. Had to incorporate a lo-fi, live type of feeling that lots of music today doesnt have...of course the shit gotta swing. If some of the drums sound off-beat...your senses arent lying, it is. Like I sed in my in colour vol 2 liner notes...perfect is boring. Feel the vibe and the grooves. Sometimes I dont wanna go to the club. Sometimes I wanna just vibe out and shoot some pool, or just relax. People nowadays are afraid to relax. So, if you havent caught the idea...musically, I wanted to tell a story...12am until 7am....so having said that, enjoy....if possible, play it only at night. Haha. One love, -eQ"

"MCs Tone B. Nimble and capital D (Tony Fields and David Kelly, respectively) are the core of All Natural, and it is their utopian vision that guides Second Nature. If it’s Police samples and cookie cutter beats you're after, I suggest you look elsewhere...but if organic production, laid-back grooves and clever rhymes are your bag, All Natural could be just what the doctor (Dre) ordered to ease your troubled mind." "This album was produced entirely by Rob Viktum. All cuts were composed by Mr Dibbs. All artists appear courtesy of good faith on some real human being ish!!!
A little background on why I did this record. I have had the pleasure of being a part of a Cambodian family for the last 4 years, through my girlfriend. I was completely oblivious to the Khmer Rouge and the horrors they put their people through. I made this record to hopefully raise awareness to this, and to put the power in your hands to do research and find out for yourself, what our government did to the people of Cambodia, and what our involvement in Cambodia gave birth to. Okay, go research, and learn.... off my soap box...all the beats on this record were made with Vinyl that my Girlfriends father brought over from Cambodia years ago, and gave to me. I will forever be in debt to him and his family for taking me in and teaching me about Cambodian Culture. This record is for them.
Peace and Blessings, Rob Viktum."
Was sounding great back in '07 and still sounds fresh today. Not something you wanna miss.

"... Boxcutter has found the time to lay out a full-fat album brimming with grubby bass, heavy beats and all manner of electronic dovetails. Pretty much the sole torch-carrier for the Northern Irish dubstep scene, Barry Lynn (aka Boxcutter) makes the kind of lead-heavy missives which share the cross-over appeal of Burial or VEX'D, whilst keeping a foot firmly in the more electronically-founded margins of the genre. [...] Boxcutter proceeds to chew the back-end off all manner of digitally fractured beats; with the likes of 'Grub', 'Rikta' and 'Brood' borderline AFX in their gnarled manipulation of the silicon." Lokua’s earlier works consist largely of down-tempo instrumental hip-hop. Recent works branch out to include a large scope of electronic genres with a significant amount of dance material. Lokua’s sound is characterized by the richness and sincerity of its emotional content with even the danciest of tracks retaining a deep, cerebral sophistication."

"Shock music is lame -- artists who front like they are crazy just make me laugh. There's no worse gimmick than appealing to the lowest common denominator of human perversion just to sell a record. Exceptions to the rule do exist, however. Eventually the dementia of modern society will spawn an artist who can put forth disturbing imagery and open your world to a whole new realm of fucked up perception. D-Styles is one of those people, and Phantazmagorea is his sadistic masterpiece. What makes this record even more awe-inspiring is that D-Styles does not say one word on the album, and except for a very miniscule amount of sound, all the music and vocals contained in this release were sampled, scratched and tweaked off of a turntable. This is scratch music in its purest form and is changing the game, retiring new jacks and sending veteran turntablists back to the lab to figure out what the fuck happened." -- Elias Perez, Synthesis.net [...]

"2009 from the Canadian singer and rapper. K-os, born Kevin Brereton, is a genuine neo-crossover artist, proud to not fit perfectly into any genre. On Yes!, K-os raises the proverbial bar, starring as equal part fire-spitting MC, crooner and composer. K-os embraces such contradictions, and it's probably what will make Yes! one of the year's most hyped releases, destined to become a favorite of music bloggers, club DJs and Pop charts." [..]

A solid debut from O.C. Which dropped around the same time of Illmatic and Ready to Die, So you know it didn't get any attention at all. It's less polished (no puff daddy dancing around), but the production (primarly handled by Buckwild) is top notch.

Info:
"Given the singles-oriented nature of the genre, it's not too surprising that you can count the number of great hip-hop concept albums on one hand -- most of 'em coming from the dynamic Handsome Boy Modeling School duo of Prince Paul (see A Prince Among Thieves) and Dan "The Automator" Nakamura (see Dr. Octagonecologyst). But now Writer's Block (The Movie) can be added to that list: Over the course of 14 tracks, MC Capital D and production team the Molemen craft an imagery-filled tale as vivid as anything your average Hollywood writer could concoct. There's Eliza, a "Young Girl Lost" who left home at the age of 15 because her "two block radius was much too small/To contain her ambitions/With no inhibitions at all." There's "Mrs. Manley," the protagonist's elderly neighbor who "was like a surrogate mother for my family/It don't stop there, it's like the whole block/Used to treat her doorstep like a bus stop." And then there's Jay, a local thug who's "a magnet for trouble" and winds up the target of a drive-by in "Crossfire." These characters, and many more, are wound together in a well-crafted storyline that isn't so much about writer's block, the affliction, as it is about a writer with an impeccable eye for detail immersing the listener in the things he witnesses every day on his block. With the pitch-perfect production of the Molemen lending added emotion to each of Capital D's slice-of-street-life tales, Writer's Block really is like a movie waiting to get made."~ Bret Love, All Music Guide

Debut album features the beautifully haunting and relaxing track 'Cold Water Music', uptempo and danceable 'Downstate', dark and terrifying 'Demonique', and jazzy 'Journey To The End of The Night'. One thing that typically drags producer driven albums is subpar featured guests -- which isn't the case here. From tracks like 'The Force' featuring Q-Ball & Curt Cazal to tracks like 'Sail' featuring Kate Rogers, the album flows unexpectedly very well.

"One thing's for sure: you won't have heard a hip-hop album quite like Hinterland before. Aim man Andy Turner recorded this--the follow-up to his excellent debut album, Cold Water Music--in a private studio on the sleepy Barrow-In-Furness seafront, a hundred miles from the bustling hip-hop underground of Manchester where he made his name. Rolling elements of vintage soul and classic Bacharach-style songwriting into its grand hip-hop design, Hinterland pulls out wild cards a-plenty. [...]" - Louis Pattison

Mr. SOS - Expose (produced by Pedro y El Lobo)
Fans of CunninLynguists may remember Mr. SOS from 'Will Rap For Food', 'Southernunderground', and 'Strange Journey Volume 1'. Anyways this is less about Mr. SOS and more about the dope instrumental track off of his debut album. This particular track was produced by an unknown who goes by the name Pedro y El Lobo (according to this website)

"NIGHTMARES ON WAX presents WAX ON records... Sounds like it’s about time to reveal the full spectrum of more "honest music“ – and to present the cherry picked artist roster on the new label run by Nightmares on Wax mastermind George Evelyn aka DJ E.A.S.E. Who, yes, selcted and supervised this showcase in his typical manner: from the soul, with soul, for the soul, and with loads of positivity. Let us not forget the kickin’ beats... and then WAX ON! - [..]
The album has varied tempos/moods, but it flows quite well. (The intro track is just perfect)

Info:
"Something different, this time out, with the part nu-chill, part world music, part live-played album, 'Rai-Ken' from Bristol, UK native Ollie Cram - it's pitched somewhere between the chillout of previous Monotonik releaser Izmar and something much further out than that, and that's why we dig it.
Things start out with 'Over Yonder', all interplay with the live-played organ - there's also guitar, keyboards, synth, bass, and mandolin played live on the album by Mr. Cram himself - before we move on to the funky guitar interplay of 'Whatever You Say', and far beyond that." - [..]

"The Brooklyn duo consisting of DJ/producer PF Cuttin' and rapper Outloud first formed their alliance in 1985. Choosing a patient, indirect path rather than the fast track, the duo worked behind the scenes for ten years producing tracks for artists such as Masta Ace and Craig G. Their big breakthrough came in late 1995 with "Danger," a song that unexpectedly turned into a volcanic crossover hit. The song was spurred on by a catchy sample from Jeru Da Damaja's "Come Clean": "When the east is in the house/Oh My God." "Danger" brought the house down for many a month, proudly waving the flag of East Coast bravado in a time of dissension between coastal schools. Raising the bar of expectation extremely high for themselves, Blahzay's debut album, Blah, Blah, Blah, dropped in August of 1996. [...] ~ Michael Di Bella, All Music Guide" ..
